Student Scholarships

To help future generations keep our environment beautiful and clean, Rye Driftwood Garden Club sponsors scholarships to area schools and organizations .

Each year, Rye Driftwood Garden Club awards scholarships to to Seacoast area organizations which are engaged in horticulture, conservation, and environmental education. Past scholarships have helped fund study in subjects such as horticulture technology and genetics, horticulture therapy, as well as biodiversity and plant education for youth.

2023 Scholarship Winners

  • Eileen Murphy, outdoor education teacher Rye Elementary School ($1,000 for a 'Pollinator Garden" and $1,000. for an "Alphabet Garden")

  • Keelan Wackman from White Pine Programs, York, Maine ($1,000)

  • Henry Burke from Seacoast Science Center, Rye ($1,500)

  • Amanda Martineau and Kathy Perry from Monarch School of New England ($2,000)

2022 Scholarship Winners

  • $1500 Scholarship to The Monarch School (Rochester, NH) which is using RDGC scholarships to enhance and enrich its ongoing  Horticultural Therapy Garden programs for disabled and special students. In this program, Monarch students participate in gardening at least weekly, and those with a special interest have additional sessions with the Horticultural Therapist. Students learn how to grow and harvest produce as well as how to make good food choices.  This is the third year the school has received a scholarship from Rye Driftwood Garden Club.

  • The Seacoast Science Center (SSC) received monies to support six scholarships so that more students can experience the fun and learning of SSC's Habitat Exploration summer camp.  Thanks to RDGC’s generosity, children in need were able to attend the day camp which enables campers to learn about the environment of Odiorne Point State Park in a hands-on and engaging way.

2021 Scholarship Winners

  • $1000 Scholarship to Bedrock Gardens (Lee, NH) to pilot emerging educational programs for children and provide scholarships for youth activities and education, with the hopes of inspiring a new generation committed to horticulture and the arts.  Bedrock Gardens is in the process of expanding and enhancing its gardens, structures, and parking facilities.  Also, more educational opportunities are planned, and the Club’s scholarship will allow disadvantaged students to participate and hopefully inspire attendees to make life and career choices related to the environment. 

  • $1000 Scholarship to The Monarch School (Rochester, NH) to continue to expand their Horticultural Therapy Garden programs for disabled and special students.  Children from across the Seacoast area attend this special school which focuses on individual needs.  The benefits of their horticulture garden have proven to assist students in multiple ways.  This is the second year the school has received a scholarship from Rye Driftwood Garden Club.

  • $1000 Scholarship to White Pines Programs (York, ME) for NH Seacoast students ages 4 and up for summer horticulture camps, providing environmental educational experiences and understanding of a sustainable natural world.  Examples of their programs include Forest Kindergarten, Wild Child Nature Club, and Ways of the Wild.  Programs help forge personal resilience, nurture community, and promote care of nature. 

  • $1500 Scholarship to The Seacoast Science Center (Rye, NH) for environmental scholarships to disadvantaged Seacoast students for summer camps which explore the Seacoast and its importance.  Programs include both indoor and outdoor activities, which enable them to continue offering camps especially during the summer of COVID.
